When most people think about getting a massage, they tend to think of the physical benefits more than the psychological benefits. Everyone knows that a massage feels good; but when it is lauded as a therapy that provides “a better sense of wellbeing”, it’s not always clear what that means. In essence, it has to do with experiencing the complex mind-body relationship that lies at the core of massage therapy.

For example, most people consider themselves fairly healthy. Yet, statistics report approximately 1 in 4 adults admits struggling with brief periods of sadness, angst, sluggishness or insomnia. One of the most influential aspects of this data has to do with current environmental factors that create chemical imbalances in the brain.

These days, there are a host of things that stimulate the brain to create too much of one chemical and not enough of another. Exposure to additives in processed foods and toxins in pesticides are known to adversely affect serotonin levels in the brain. Smoking, drinking and certain prescription drugs have an effect on the brain’s hormone levels, as does a lack in the appropriate amount of sleep.

For many, constant exposure to these elements is what prompts the brain to get stuck in a cycle of misfiring the necessary amount of one or more chemicals. Low serotonin levels are known to cause depression, behavioral problems and pain disorders. Low dopamine levels are associated with the inability to focus and are often behind a poor attention span. The prolonged release of adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) is found to spur hyperactivity and high blood pressure, while low levels of the neurohormone results in fatigue and lethargy.

Reducing one’s exposure to harmful environmental factors can help improve physical health; yet, with the brain stuck in a cycle, it often continues to struggle with bringing hormone levels back into balance. Combining reduced exposure with massage therapy, however, has produced remarkable results in these types of cases. This is because, in addition to changing neural pathways in the brain, massage therapy masterfully stimulates and regulates not only serotonin but other neurohormones such as dopamine, endorphins and adrenaline.

Therefore, the elevated mood that comes after a massage is essentially the physical stimulation of the brain’s neurotransmitters and a rebalancing of chemicals that may have been offset by poor eating habits, daily exposure to environmental toxins, smoking, drinking or a lack of sleep. With time, a regular routine of massage therapy and a reduced exposure to adverse environmental factors can greatly reduce or even alleviate periods of depression, anxiety or stress.

Improved mental faculties invariably leads to improved physical function— and vice versa. With the body in constant pursuit to keep itself in balance, it is no fluke that it responds so powerfully to the physical and mental reinforcement massage therapy provides.

The post Rebalancing the Mind-Body Relationship with Massage Therapy appeared first on Wellness WORx.

Many people ask about the necessity or frequency of visits to a Bozeman chiropractor based on different things. They may be asking in reference to the expense of visits or whether there is any need to return once they have started feeling better. Sometimes, patients may wonder if their visits are too often or not often enough when they feel there is no improvement in their condition.

To put it simply, there really can be no definite answer as to how often a person should see their chiropractor. DC’s see many people with many different types of musculoskeletal health issues— and since they work with the body’s healing process rather than just treating symptoms, the answer largely hinges on the patient, the injury or issue and the course of treatment.

Two people with the same health issue or injury can receive the same treatment, yet their bodies may respond very differently. While one coasts into recovery, the other may need to move on to a new treatment altogether. Other factors, such as the extent of the issue/injury and how long it has been a condition can matter as well. It can also rely on the patient’s rate of healing, if there will be a combination of treatments (such as ultrasound or massage therapy) and if the patient is following their Bozeman chiropractor’s advice between visits.

One thing that is for sure is that communication matters. A patient should be fully advised as to what the best course of treatment is for their injury or issue and what other options are available if there is no improvement by a certain period of time. Just the same, restoring proper function should be the main goal and that is something that shouldn’t—and can’t— be dictated by a set number of visits.

An honest and reliable Bozeman chiropractor includes the patient in the treatment plan and generally doesn’t require patients to come on a fixed schedule unless there is a course of treatment for a specific injury or problem. A reassessment after the course of treatment is finished can establish if any additional therapy or maintenance care will be necessary or helpful.

Most people who continue chiropractic care after being treated for an issue do so because they find maintaining their nervous system to be a valuable component for balanced health. Patients who are unclear as to why they are visiting their chiropractor at the frequency they are have a right to ask questions and/or get a second opinion. Those who feel they are being intimidated into what they suspect are unnecessary visits or care have a right to voice their concerns to their state health professional licensing board.

The post How Often Should You See a Bozeman Chiropractor? appeared first on Wellness WORx.

An estimated 30 million people seek chiropractic treatment every year for a range of complaints. While some are already savvy to the benefits regular chiropractic care has to offer, many have simply grown weary of repeated visits to medical doctors and expensive medications to deal with recurring ailments. Sometimes, it is simply easier (and smarter) to turn to a different method of treatment that focuses more on working with the body to heal itself rather than just banishing symptoms.

Visit W|W Chiropractic

When is it time to see a chiropractor and what can it help with?

Back pain. The most common complaint that DC’s treat, back pain can be acute (short duration) or chronic (persisting). Symptoms range from general discomfort and stiffness to sharp pain and burning sensations. A combination of symptoms is not uncommon. Chiropractors spend a significantly larger amount of time learning about the spine than medical doctors; therefore, pain that occurs daily, persists, progressively worsens or interferes with the ability to be productive or perform basic daily tasks should be evaluated by a licensed chiropractic provider.

Headaches. Although there are some types of headaches that cannot be helped with chiropractic treatment, misaligned vertebra is often the cause of most headaches, making spinal manipulation remarkably effective in reducing their occurrence and severity. It is wiser to seek out chiropractic care for recurring headaches from their onset; however, most individuals wait until they have exhausted all other treatments (and their pocketbooks with costly medications) before doing so. It is important to note that a good chiropractor is adept at gauging the warning signs of headaches and when it is time to refer a patient to other medical professionals for further treatment.

Repetitive motion injuries. Repetitive motion injuries are a result of repeated movements or tasks, vigorous exertions, consistent exposure to vibrations, bearing against hard surfaces or maintaining awkward positions. This often leads to a range of ailments such as tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis and other disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system. As chiropractors are experts in the structures affected by repetitive motion injuries, it is essential to seek out early treatment with a licensed practitioner. The damage that occurs in repetitive motion injuries do not heal on their own and will likely persist or worsen over time left untreated.

Whiplash. Whiplash occurs when there is an abrupt movement of the head that is so forceful it results in an involuntary rebounding of the head or neck in the opposite direction. While this type of injury is a common result of car accidents, it can happen in other situations with little or no indication of physical impairment. Either way, injuries to the supporting tissues of the neck and head occur in a certain progression. This is why it can take time to experience resulting pain and discomfort. In instances of whiplash, it is imperative to see a licensed chiropractor as quickly as possible— even in the absence of immediate pain.

The post Is it Time to See a Chiropractor? appeared first on Wellness WORx.

There is a reason that people from all walks of life now include massage therapy in their healthcare regimen. While it is helpful with improving circulation and combatting stress, many place significant value on massage therapy’s unique ability to always provide physical and mental healing right where they need it most. It is a safe, non-invasive and cost-effective medium that can work as a preventive health measure as well as a treatment for pain and injuries.

There are numerous styles of massages that range from the simple to the complex, utilizing everything from just the hands to deep heat to essential oils. Regardless of the type, the aim of the treatment will be to develop, improve, increase, regenerate, relax, stimulate or any combination thereof.

Because different people have different needs, ascertaining which type of massage will be of greatest benefit can seem somewhat puzzling at first. However, all that is required is for an individual to first identify his or her own reason for getting one. This may be:

relief from stress

coping with symptoms of an injury or other health condition

enhancing circulation, range of motion or posture

the need for a safe, drug-free alternative to alleviate pregnancy symptoms

Choosing a licensed massage therapist and discussing the matter in detail will then help narrow down the list of options and lead to the right choice. Although fads can sometimes make certain types of massage popular for a short time, it is important that the chosen technique is effective, reliable and a good fit for an individual’s comfort level.

The styles of bodywork a massage therapist might suggest are:

Deep tissue- works the connective tissues of the body instead of the surface muscles. Recommended for individuals who engage in substantial physical activity, sufferers of sports injuries or those experiencing recurring pain.

Swedish- the most popular of all massages, works the surface muscles and contains multiple health benefits. Recommended for individuals interested in stress relief.

Sports massage-works muscle groups specific to an athlete’s use. Recommended for those involved in sports or athletic activities for prevention and treatment of injuries.

Prenatal- works the muscles, regulates pregnancy hormones and enhances circulation and mobility. Recommended for women who want or need a drug-free option for coping with symptoms of pregnancy.

Trigger point- works certain muscle tissues that “trigger” pain in other areas of the body. Recommended for sufferers of chronic myofascial pain, fibromyalgia and tension headaches.

Many therapists also offer specialty massages that combine Swedish or deep tissue bodywork with the use of hot stones or aromatic oils to enhance the experience and uplift a client’s mood.

Even with all the benefits massage has to offer, it is important to note that certain medical conditions do not respond well to this type of therapy. Problems or issues with bone fractures, osteoporosis, blood disorders, skin infections, cancer or high blood pressure should be disclosed in the initial meeting with a massage therapist.

Very few people spend time thinking about their sense of smell until they get a cold. Suddenly, that perfect pasta dish that would otherwise be gobbled down isn’t all that pleasing. This is understandable since most people depend on their sense of sight to process information about the world around them. It is still interesting how a smell can alert a person to danger, stimulate salivation and even trigger long-forgotten memories.

The sense of smell is important for human functioning and has more effect on our wellbeing than given credit for. The information extracted from a scent by receptors in the nose is processed in the limbic system, a part of the brain that affects emotion, memory and motivation. Other parts of the brain undoubtedly play a part; however, when it comes down to it, whatever a person smells– good or bad– will evoke a motivational response.

Different variables affect the acuteness of a person’s sense of smell as well as the response elicited from inhaling an aroma. Nonetheless, a study has shown that there are some scents that tend to inspire relaxing or rejuvenating responses in the brain, thereby influencing mood and behavior. This is why aromatherapy is highly advantageous when combined with therapeutic massage.

Aromatherapy involves inhaling scents derived from pure oils extracted from plants and flowers. Because the molecules are from an organic source, receptors in the nose are able to easily pass the information it receives to the brain, resulting in a swift response throughout the body. A calming effect is sustained or a person can feel an alertness or clarity depending on what their limbic system deciphers.

Combining these pure oils (or, essential oils) with therapeutic massage helps whisk the body to a parasympathetic where healing for the mind and body become optimum. As an added bonus, essential oils can be absorbed into the blood stream where their greatest healing benefits can be moved and utilized right where they are needed. This explains why massage therapy with essential oils is the most effective topical treatment for cellulite.

Licensed massage therapists are schooled not only in the physical and psychological healing properties of essential oils but their proper blending and application. They can easily define which combinations will create the best results for a client’s needs. Lavender oil, used for relaxation, may be mixed with other constituents when there is a need to reduce cortisol levels. Citrus scents, commonly used as mood boosters, may be mixed with chamomile oil for headaches.

Aromatherapy upgrades the experience of a massage and is a safe, natural way to reinforce wellbeing. While a perfect bouquet of scents purge the mind of negative emotions, massage therapy prompts the release of toxins from the muscles and tissues. This creates a better foundation for rejuvenation and recuperation and allows the body to restore its natural balance much more efficiently.
The post Aromatherapy and Massage: The Other Dynamic Duo appeared first on Wellness WORx.

When it comes to a person’s health, asking whether chiropractic medicine is safe is a reasonable query. However, it’s curious that there would be so much reservation about its safety compared to conventional medicine since they pretty much got their start in the same place. A number of cultures, from the Japanese to the ancient Greeks, knew the art of spinal manipulation and used it right alongside the many medical practices that now form the art of modern medicine.

Each year, billions are spent on studying new medical treatments and drug therapies, the results thoroughly detailed in respected journals. This brings a sense of confidence when it comes to dealing with something as complex as human health. At the same time, it also creates a sense of dependence. If a treatment doesn’t have “the facts” to back it up, how can one know whether it is reliable?

Chiropractic medicine has a remarkably extensive amount of scientific data to substantiate it as a safe, natural and effective treatment. In fact, once research proves its efficacy in one area, it routinely sparks further investigation into its helpfulness with other health issues. It is defining the complex details of how chiropractic medicine is able to create such therapeutic effects that have yet to be fully explained.

This is not all that surprising considering the approach to chiropractic treatment is to assist the body in its healing process rather than just attacking physical symptoms. Since the healing process is one that includes aspects of mental and emotional well-being (aspects whose effects on healing are not fully understood by anyone just yet) there are obviously more variables in the mix for chiropractic medicine.
Conventional or not, all medical treatments and therapies have their hazards. The potential risks of chiropractic treatment are bruising, headache, muscle strain, undefined soreness, bone fracture and stroke. A short-term soreness of the treated area is typical and the most commonly noted after effect.

Interestingly, it is routine for a study to accurately track the extent of side effects in a new drug or treatment; yet, it is difficult to do the same in chiropractic medicine. Harsh side effects so rarely occur in patients of proper chiropractic treatment, there has never been enough evidence to bridge a link between the two. In the instances dangerous “side effects” have occurred (such as stroke or bone fracture), a predisposed condition was often an underlying factor. This plays a part in why malpractice premiums for chiropractors often range from $2000-4000 while doctors who practice conventional medicine can pay up to $100,000, if not more.

Much of the hesitation about the safety of chiropractic treatment stems from attitudes taken by those not in the practice or who have likely never experienced treatment from a licensed provider. In addition, most have been conditioned to believe that illness and injury requires complex, intrusive therapies to help the body heal itself. Though not completely untrue, it’s not always accurate either. In all reality, the human body is phenomenally adept at healing itself and meddling with the process can sometimes hinder more than help.

The question of whether chiropractic treatment is safe is likely to be around for a while as people look for more effective and natural ways to maintain their health. Those who have grown weary of depending solely on conventional treatments for medical problems and coming out the poorer for it (physically and financially) are likely to find the approach of working with the body to heal itself a more suitable means of staying healthy.
The post Chiropractic Care: How Safe Is It? appeared first on Wellness WORx.

Vigorous exercise is responsible for more than its fair share of muscle aches and strains. When an intense workout results in a stiff, sore and achy body, it’s merely a sign that the tiny fibers that make up the muscles have become torn and inflamed. Many consider this the perfect opportunity to pop ibuprofen or some other type of anti-inflammatory medication. While they can be convenient for dealing with pain, anti-inflammatories don’t enhance the body’s ability to heal itself. In fact, they are more likely to diminish it.

Science has found that cytokines, compounds that play a role in inflammation, are less prominent in muscle tissues that have received a massage after vigorous workouts. On the other hand, mitochondria (the structures inside cells that convert glucose into energy for damage repair) markedly increase their production. This means while taking an anti-inflammatory merely reduces irritation, massage therapy reduces irritation and promotes healing simultaneously.
An added advantage to massage therapy that a pill cannot offer is the psychological effects. When taking a pill, an individual often spends more time concentrating on the pain, does not expect to experience relief until the medication starts to work and expects the pain to return once it has worn off. The cycle of pill-popping begins and the body is hindered from carrying out its rightful functions.

The receiver of massage therapy, however, typically comes away from his or her session relaxed, mindful and with a greater perception of healing. Creating this clear highway between the mind and body provides an even faster rate of recuperation. This explains why massage therapy has now become a core treatment for enhancing the performance of professional athletes.

The cost and convenience of popping a pill from the medicine cabinet versus seeing a massage therapist may be a sticking point for some. Considering that taking anti-inflammatories can mean pushing the healing process back (or retarding it altogether when overused) when massage therapy promotes faster, safer healing is reason to think again. The better an individual gets at working with the body to heal itself, the better and less expensive his or her long-term health will be.

With over 300,000 massage therapists in the United States alone, massage therapy is becoming more than just a way to pamper oneself and relax. Studies are showing the critical importance of touch to the human experience and the breakthroughs that come when it is used to complement conventional medical treatments. To the average individual, a massage might not seem all that complicated. In truth, researchers are just beginning to piece together all the complex processes stimulated by this “simple” act.
The post The Science of Massage Therapy and Sore Muscles appeared first on Wellness WORx.

Stop and think for a minute. Were it not for the millions of intricately placed nerves throughout the human body, how would it function? Without their proper performance, where would this leave the average individual to carry out the basic tasks of everyday life? (Including the ones that are done without even thinking about it?)

It is not uncommon to take all this for granted until a spinal joint shifts out of alignment, aggravating the delicate nerves around it. As the muscles respond by trying to stabilize the area of injury in order to protect it, stiffness, achiness and exhaustion result. Is this something that should really be masked with the use of pain-killers? What does ingesting pill after pill do for the rest of the body’s tissues?

Rather than go through a cycle of pain and temporary improvement, the more sensible option is to get to the root of the problem. A growing number of people rely on chiropractic care to restore their body’s balance and safely and naturally cope with:

neck pain

back pain

migraines and headaches

joint pain (ankle, elbow, hip, knee, shoulder or wrist)

sprains and strains

stress/fatigue

weight loss

In keeping with the hands-on approach to alleviate discomfort, sufferers can work with their chiropractic provider to create a strategy that further enhances the healing process. In addition, patients of chiropractic care can receive practical guidance on incorporating a healthier diet, exercise, stress management and other positive lifestyle changes as well.

A philosophy of providing a treatment that combines the aspects of a patient’s mind and body means a more personalized approach to care. Instead of attacking symptoms with a one-size-fits-all solution that may or may not work, chiropractic providers look to work with the body rather than trying to get it to “shut up”. This is the difference between supporting its long-term function and compromising it.

Dealing with a recurring health issues can sometimes make people forget they have a right to live a productive life. With the help of a licensed chiropractic provider, a sufferer can return to his or her full potential and maintain it without the use of drugs, invasive surgeries and other costly procedures. A patient’s journey to better health can feel a lot less convoluted and, for once, much more achievable.
The post What Chiropractic Care Can Mean for You appeared first on Wellness WORx.

Desserts have been sworn off, walking shoes have come out of the closet and exercise videos everywhere have been dusted off as dieters prepare to attack their New Year’s resolution with fervor. Losing weight is a commonly revisited goal for the first of the year. It’s even more common to notice that each attempt keeps getting harder– even when following a weight loss regimen to a tee.

Most dieters go back to cutting unhealthy foods and adding weights to a workout as a way to drop their excess pounds. However, implementing these measures as a temporary modification rather than a lifestyle change is the reason most dieters start out doing quite well but eventually revert back to old habits.

Using massage therapy to bolster a weight loss strategy is one of the most overlooked yet effective measures that keep the weight loss journey from feeling like a battle. Massage therapy is not only relaxing, it has fantastic benefits that actually push the weight loss process along. In fact, studies have shown it can assist in getting noticeable results more than just diet and exercise alone.

The benefit of massage therapy comes from the way it works directly with the circulatory system. Moving blood to the body’s tissues means muscles and other organs get more in the way of oxygen and nutrients. This results in a healthier physique with more vitality because nourishment is getting where it needs to and is being used more effectively and efficiently.

Massage therapy also promotes flexibility, something all people need as they age. Flexibility is a marvelous injury preventer and is necessary for normal muscle function. Most importantly, it thwarts unhealthy changes in posture, something that can compromise the body’s ability to support its own natural movements.

A distinct aspect (that diet and exercise alone do not offer) is the way massage therapy brings a dieter into what is referred to as a parasympathetic state. This mode of relaxation for the body reinforces its healing processes, allowing a more effective recuperation. When the recovery time between workouts becomes less, a dieter can progress in his or her fitness routine at a better rate. This can mean reaching a weight loss goal sooner than expected.

Massage therapy is something that creates a better relationship between an individual and his or her body, making it easier to stick to a weight loss strategy and see results. It refreshes the mind, the body and not only aids in dropping pounds but helps keep them off. With all it has to offer, the greatest benefit of massage therapy is that no one ever has to wait until New Year’s to incorporate it into their weight loss plan.
The post Massage Therapy & Weight Loss appeared first on Wellness WORx.

We like to use imagery when we’re trying to explain to our clients exactly what it is that a chiropractic adjustment does for your spine. Think of it like this. Imagine your spine is a bicycle chain. Now imagine that chain looks like the chain in the image to the left of this sentence. If you were the person riding this bike you would probably have a tough time quickly become tired. Likewise, you can probably imagine that the gears this chain was running on will likely wear out quicker than normal. These are very simple concepts for us all to understand.

Well, the muscles, bones and joints that comprise your spine aren’t much different. You can think of the muscles like the rider of the bike with that rusty chain, and the joints of the spine like the gears that the chain is running on. If your spine does not have its proper range of motion, you will begin to experience muscle tightness and pain around the affected area. At the same time, the joints that make up your spine will wear out at an increased rate. This can lead to disc degeneration and osteoarthritis.

I recall a study that was done on rabbits. In this experiment the observers surgically wired the back part of the spines of rabbits to limit the movement of the spinal joints. After a short time they removed the wire and observed the results. They were astonished to find that the rabbit spines were already exhibiting early stages of osteoarthritis in response to the limited range of motion.

We have many clients at Walk In Chiropractic who love to come in on a regular basis to keep the function of their spine as good as it can be for them. These folks retain their spinal range of motion into their later years and we feel that increased movement keeps people more active and healthier for a longer period of time. So if it makes sense to maintain your bike chain for longevity, maybe it will make sense to maintain your spine as well.
